Working in lofts
Most lofts fit the same pattern: a ladder through a small hatch, joist boards laid over insulation, limited headroom. I work off the boards rather than the insulation (no one wants a foot through the landing ceiling), head-torch on, bringing items down in bags and boxes rather than tossing them through the hatch. Small hatches are normal in older semis — I’ll flag up front if anything oversized can’t come down whole.

We do a quick three-pile sort as items come down: definitely-skip, maybe-keep, charity. It adds 30 minutes to the job and saves you throwing away something you didn’t realise was in there. Photos, paperwork, old school reports, anything personal goes into a “check these” box for you to go through, not the van.
